The IDIBGI Biobank offers a wide catalogue of human biological samples and services for biomedical research. The Biobank is responsible for more than just handing over samples: it also offers support to internal and external researchers at the various stages of their projects:

  • Technical and scientific advice

    • Creation and management of new collections (samples and associated data)
    • Advice on technical and methodological procedures for correctly obtaining, handling, processing, storing and using biological samples
    • Coordination of sample collections in multi-centre studies
    • Advice and training with regard to the ethical and legal aspects of obtaining and using biological samples
    • Help with searches for samples in other biobanks (the IDIBGI Biobank is part of the Spanish Biobank Network)
    • Training in how to use the Biobank’s equipment

  • Record-keeping

    • Management of biobank collections, project collections, and line-of-research collections (samples, data and associated documents)
    • Registration of line-of-research collections in the Spanish Biobank Register (Institute of Health Carlos III, ISCIII)
    • Storage and conservation of biological samples (freezers and nitrogen tanks)
    • Real-time monitoring of the cooling equipment. 24/7 service for responding to alarms, incidents, etc.
    • Preparation of historical reports on temperature control in the cooling equipment

  • Technical services (histological, cellular and molecular techniques)

    • Processing of frozen and paraffinised tissue (microscopy, histological sections, freezing, and the creation of paraffin blocks)
    • Basic immunohistochemical and histological staining
    • Processing, isolation of samples and aliquotation of their derivatives (total blood, blood derivatives, urine, faeces, tissue, etc.)
    • Extraction of DNA/RNA from peripheral blood or buffy coat
    • Extraction of DNA/RNA from frozen or paraffinised tissue
    • DNA/RNA quantification and quality control
    • Equipment and material at the Biobank is available for use by researchers (subject to prior agreement)

  • Provision of samples

Management of requests for biological samples and associated clinical data:
    • Receipt of requests
    • Referral to committees external to the Biobank (ethics committee and scientific committee)
    • Assistance with the preparation of the necessary documents
    • Preparation and sending of the agreement for the transfer of biological material and associated data (MTA)
    • Preparation of the samples and associated data and sending of these to the requesting parties
