As is the case with most hospitals, the Dr Josep Trueta University Hospital of Girona and other attached centres conduct biomedical research in addition to caring for patients. The purpose of this research is to advance our understanding of diseases and the way we prevent, diagnose and treat them. This involves gathering clinical data and biological samples from patients and healthy donors in order to analyse them and draw conclusions. Many of the recent scientific breakthroughs in medicine have been made thanks to this type of study.
Do you want to play a part in advancing biomedical research?
What is a biobank?
A biobank is a public non-profit establishment which houses various collections of biological samples that are intended for biomedical research and are organised as a technical unit, with quality, order and purpose criteria*.
The purpose of the Biobank is to serve as a bridge between donors and researchers, by upholding the wishes of the donors and the value of the research. In order to provide a high-quality service during the research and protect the entire process from a legal perspective, the Biobank assumes control right from the collection of samples and clinical data up to the processing, storage and provision of samples for maximum-interest scientific projects, always under the supervision of a scientific committee and an ethics committee.
Donation is voluntary and altruistic
Providing biological samples to the IDIBGI Biobank, which is owned by the Biomedical Research Institute of Girona (IDIBGI), is a completely free and voluntary process. On that account, you will not receive any economic benefit in return for providing samples or for taking part in subsequent research studies. Before making your donation, you must sign an informed consent form.
Withdrawal of the donation
You can withdraw your consent at any time after signing the sample donation form, without having to give a reason and, obviously, without this having any effect on your present or future medical care. To withdraw your consent, you must send a written request to the director of the IDIBGI Biobank by post (Parc Hospitalari Martí i Julià (Edifici M2) – C/ Dr. Castany, s/n – 17190 Salt, Girona) or by email (firstname.lastname@example.org).
